Frequently Asked Questions for Interactive Mapping

How long will it take for the interactive map to load?  back to top

In order to provide useful tools to view and investigate the data sets, the interactive maps are implemented using frames that contain many HTML files, scripts, and graphics. As a result these pages may take a long time to load depending on your Internet connection. The interactive maps range in size between 200-400 kB. Please use the following table to estimate the time it will take you to view and use these maps.

64K ISDN 20 to 60 sec
128K ISDN 10 to 30 sec
640K-DSL 2 to 15 sec
T1 or 1.5 DSL 1 to 10 sec



I am experiencing problems getting the application to load and work correctly, what should I do?

Problem: Application is stuck in retrieving data or retrieving map mode.
  • If you are using Popup Window Killer software on your PC, disable it and reload the application. These applications incorporate popup windows to display information for tables, tips, help system, etc.


  • Problem: On initial loading of the application it gets stuck and several messages popup.
  • Close the browser window, clear the cache and reload the application.  

  • If using Netscape click here.

    Steps to clear cache for Internet Explorer:
    Go to Tools and select "Internet Options..." as shown in Figure 1.

    Next, click the "Delete Files..." button under Temporary Internet files; highlighted in red in Figure 2.

    Next, click OK; highlighted in red in Figure 3.

    Next, reload the application.


    Steps to clear cache for Netscape:
    Go to Edit and select "Preferences..." as shown in Figure 1.

    Next, click the "Cache" button under the Advanced tab, click "Clear Memory Cache" and "Clear Disk Cache" and then "OK"; all buttons are highlighted in red in Figure 2.

    Next, reload the application.

    How are the applications displayed best on my screen?


    Set your Screen Area to 1024 x 768 Pixels and Colors to True Color 32 Bit.

    How can I find an address?   back to top

    Click on this icon to find an address. A form will be presented below the map as shown in Figure 1.

    Enter a valid address and zip code into the form. The zip code should only be 5 digits. You can choose not to use a zip code if it is unknown. The more information entered, the more accurate your results will be. Once you have entered the correct information, click the Locate Button to find the address.
    Some cases will result in more than one address returned. In this case, the program found more than one possible match. You are able to select the one you want by clicking the address.

    If known, you may want to try your neighbor's address to get close to yours. Some addresses may not be in our situs database or they may be listed differently.
    Verify that the address you entered is a correct address. If it is, try using an alternate street name if one exists. Following are some examples of alternate street names:
  • SR 44 = New York Ave or Canal St or Lytle Ave
  • SR A1A = Atlantic Ave
  • SR 441 = Peninsula Dr
  • CR 305 = Bunnell Rd or Lake George Rd
  • CR 4162 = Doyle Rd
  • CR 4116 = Orange Camp Rd
  • SR 15A = Spring Garden Av
  • International Speedway = INTL Speedway or US HWY 17-92
  • St Rd; State Road = SR ie: SR 11, SR 44, SR 441
  • US = US HWY ie: US HWY 1, US HWY 17
  • Do not use periods such as Ave. or S.R.
  • Try removing street directions and street types. ie: 123 W Indiana Av = 123 Indiana
  • Try leaving out the zip code.
  • Try combining the street name if it contains multiple words. ie: Oceans West = Oceanswest or Park West = Parkwest
  • Following is an Alternative Method

  • If you are still unable to locate the address but know where to look on the map, use the zoom and pan tools to navigate to the area. Once you have navigated to the correct location, you may want to use the Identify Tool to obtain information about the area.

    How can I save the map to put into another document such as Word or Power Point?  back to top

    First create a print page by clicking the Print Icon . Click the Create Print Page button to generate the print page. Right click the map image and choose the "Save Picture As..." option. Save the picture as a png or bmp to your PC.You can import the image into any document that supports the png or bmp image format.



    How can I email the map to someone?  back to top

    If you are using Internet Explorer 6 or higher within Windows 2000 or Windows XP;
    Create a print page by clicking the Print Icon located in the toolbar.
    Click the Create Print Page button to generate the print page. Right click the map image and choose the "E-mail picture..." option.

    For Windows 95 or 98;
    Create a print page by clicking the Print Icon located in the toolbar. Click the Create Print Page button to generate the print page. Right click the map image and choose the "Save Picture As..." option. Save the picture as a png or bmp to your PC. Next, attach the file to your email as an attachment.



    What is the Geography Network?  back to top
    The Geography Network describes itself as,

    "... a global network of geographic information users and providers. It provides the infrastructure needed to enable the sharing of geographic information between data providers, service providers, and users around the world. The Internet is used to deliver geographic content to the user's browser and desktop. Through the Geography Network, you can access many types of geographic content including live maps, downloadable data, and more advanced services. The Geography Network content is distributed at many locations around the world, providing you access to the latest information available directly from the source."
